    Human Rights and Iron-Fisted Leaders

What was that great quote, you know when Caesar said; “The first thing we do is kill all the lawyers,” and often people use that quote out of context, remember at the time of Caesar wanted to take over, and he knew he had to eliminate all the lawyers to do so. Indeed, any studier of Machiavellian Rule would realize that when you take over another country, the first thing you need to do is get rid of the intellectuals, lawyers, educators, leaders, and then lead the masses by fear.

Now then, I am certainly not one is to believe that in the present period, Machiavellian Rule should be the order of the day. However, I also realize I am not alone in this world, neither is the United States of America. Many of our trading partners do not think the way we do, do not have a capitalist slant, nor do their leaders necessarily believe in personal freedoms, liberty, or democracy. A case in point could be China for instance.

    Here in the US we don’t know much about what goes on in China, as they are careful to censor the news coming out of that country, and definitely the news coming in. But we know they are often up to what we might consider from our perspective as Americans; no good. Last month there was an interesting piece in Sino Daily Online News titled “China cracking down on rights lawyers: Amnesty,” written by the Staff Writers in Hong Kong (AFP) and published on June 30, 2011. The article stated what many people have feared would happen;

“Beijing has unleashed an “uncompromising” assault on China’s legal profession, targeting human rights lawyers in an effort to head off social unrest, Amnesty International said. The move was a bid to control rights lawyers who take on sensitive cases as fears mount that uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa could take root in the world’s most populous nation, the rights group said in a new report.”

The article speculated that this was being done by communist leaders to silence dissent, and revoking licenses, harassment, random disappearances, and torture had been reported. As much is it displeases me to say anything good about lawyers, the Chinese people need someone on their side right about now. Yes, with 1.4 billion people China has no chance but to enforce their laws. The question is; are they enforcing the right ones.

On one hand there is severe corruption on the side of government, and yet it seems the ruling party is slow to enforce those issues, but they will go after any citizen who calls out any of their dastardly deeds, or any lawyer who goes to defend a citizen who speaks out, or any group that comes to their aid. There will always be challenges with human rights when leaders have absolute power. China needs checks and balances, and the United States should be careful whom it associates with. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

    Four Decades of Aston Skill

John Goldsmith never planned to be an Aston specialist. He qualified as a submariner in the early ’70s and used to tear around in a Downton-modified MGB. Then, at a party, his friend Rhys Williams persuaded him to part with 2000 GBP for DB4 Series V Vantage, one of only six fitted with a 12-plug GT engine. “I was on my way to buy a V12 E-type, but I was hooked once I’d seen the Aston”, recalls Goldsmith.

The car required an engine rebuild, however, which Goldsmith did himself with the help of a mate. His hobby became a business and, as word spread, more Aston Martins in need of repair came through the workshop door. “In those early days”, he adds, “the cars didn’t have the value they now have and we saw some shocking welding and body repairs that we had to put right”.

Goldsmith also helped drivers to track-prepare their cars, all with the right safety mods, and knew how to get the best performance from their Astons. When parts became tricky to source, Goldsmith and Young started to remanufactured many of the most difficult to find: “Newport Pagnell would often wait until they had enough back orders before starting a production run of some parts. In the meantime, owners had to wait, which we felt was unacceptable. Right now, there is a shortage of new single-plug heads and we are able to support our customers from our second-hand parts stock that has been built up over many years”.

As well as accident repair and servicing, G&Y has an impressive restoration record. It has recently finished the ex-Innes Ireland DB2/4, one of only two Bertone-bodied convertibles made. Also nearing completion are a California Sage DB5 barn-find and the ex-David Saville-Peck Rawlson Costello CanAm racer that Gold-smith acquired in bits in ’98.

Across the yard, with master craftsman John Stapleford of JJS Engineering, there’s a DB4GT Zagato recreation and a DB6 that came in as a wrecked coupe and will leave as a short-chassis Volante.

“We do whatever is needed to get as near to a perfect finish as we can”, says Goldsmith. “You don’t know what you have until a car is dismantled and we often end up having to replace much more on a vehicle that looked fine when it drove in”.

In the engine-building room, Jow Thornhill is assembling a race ‘six’ fitted with Cosworth pistons and many other upgrades for a DB6. It will be fully tested on the firm’s dynamometer before installation.

Other jobs include an E-type in for historic rally prep for its lady owner and an MGB GT V8 that needs an axle and front-suspension overhaul. Over in G&Y’s storage facility is the ‘Quicksilver’ DB5, the only one made with straight head-lights similar to those of a DB4.

The final cog in the Goldsmith and Young wheel is circuit tuition by Goldsmith’s ARDS-qualified wife Gillian, who was a Ford works driver in the 1970s and has been competing ever since.

The Layered Past of Japanese Culture

For most of its history, the island nation of Japan existed in nearly complete isolation, even from its nearest neighbors. Although the first European trade ships arrived in the mid-16th century, the country’s rulers soon imposed a series of ever-tighter restrictions that effectively kept the country in isolation until 1844. This resulted in an unusually distinct culture, one with different art forms and different traditions from any other.

Because it developed with few outside influences, contemporary Japanese culture is more likely to reflect layers from its own distant past than from geographically closer cultures, or cultures it is has much in common with today. For example, even in the midst of this busy, densely populated, and largely urban country, the ancient reverence for nature remains strong. Natures presence is everywhere in art, in large public gardens and the miniaturized bonsai trees, in pursuit of traditional pastimes such as sumi-e, the ink wash painting whose in stylized motifs on everything from tea cups to playing card.

A surprising number of holidays are dedicated to the appreciation of nature. Both the spring and fall equinoxes are public holidays, as is Greenery Day. February though April is blossom viewing season, when families go on excursions and picnic in public parks to enjoy the blossoming plum, peach, and cherry trees. With the fall harvest comes the Moon Viewing Festival, which dates back thousands of years.

A more recent layer of Japanese culture, very much in evidence today, is an intense appreciation of art and the artistic way of doing things. The long period of isolation saw the rise of unique forms of poetry, dance, and other arts. Three forms of theater reached particularly high levels of achievement noh, whose rice-white mask with raised, caterpillar-like eyebrows is now familiar throughout the world bunraku, in which large puppets whose finely articulated faces, hands, and feet are manipulated by three-man teams of master puppeteers and kabuki, a story told through stylized dance and song. Kabuki was not the offspring of court life but of real life. It flourished in red light districts and all manner of society mingled together in the audience. With it came, ukiyo-e, the art of woodblock prints, which often depicted actors, geisha, and other commoners as favorite subjects.

The emphasis on aesthetic achievement and appreciation also found its way into ordinary life. Calligraphy, preparing tea, presenting food, and arranging flowers all became acts of artistic expression as well as day-to-day living. These arts still flourish, and it is not at all unusual for contemporary Japanese to pursue mastery of calligraphy or join a society whose sole function is to participate in a festival hundreds of years old.

To Westerners, the idea of taking lessons to prepare tea within a framework of choreographed gestures, or learning to arrange flowers in harmony with the placement of heaven and earth, may seem baffling. To contemporary Japanese, it is no mystery at all. These flashes of the past are part of the present culture. People still attend kabuki, heckling actors as enthusiastically as their ancestors did, and ukiyo-es bold actors are still visible in the fluid lines and exaggerated characters of today’s manga.

Radiator Leak: Do Leaky Radiators Just Happen?

Do car radiator leaks just happen? According to the National Automotive Radiator Repair Association (NARRA), they do. NARRA studies suggest that leaks have more to do with age than mileage. This is the reason changing your vehicle’s coolant annually is such a good idea.

Although many external factors can cause a leak, such as impact, road salts, and chemical reactions, the most common breakdown happens inside the core itself. When your car’s anti-freeze gets old or overly diluted with water it cannot do its job lubricating and inhibiting corrosion. This problem is easy to recognize when the coolant fluid becomes discolored.

There are multiple warning signs indicating that your vehicle has a leak. The two most obvious signs are puddles of coolant under your car or truck, or an ongoing low fluid level condition. You’ll recognize the puddle under your car as radiator fluid by the bright, neon green color. Another sign that might not be as obvious is an unusual odor inside the car. It will be an annoyingly sweet smell.

Once you realize that your vehicle has a leak, the next step is to determine the location. The most common failure points are the radiator tanks, cooling and heating system hoses, petcock (drain valve), and the thermostat. If the smell inside your vehicle is exceptionally strong it is also possible that you have a heater core issue.

The best way to find a drip in the cooling system is to start your car, lift your hood and inspect with a flashlight. Be careful to stay clear of moving parts. Check the bottom hoses first, as this is very common.

If the issue is a hose you’re in luck. This is a very easy repair. Your local auto parts store will typically have the hose and new clamps for less than $25. You’ll also need a gallon of anti-freeze to refill the system after you replace the hose.

If the leak is in your radiator, you might be able to apply a “cold weld” temporary fix using an epoxy cement. The most popular product on the market for this is J-B WELD. It’s a two part epoxy that’s been around for decades. It offers a safe and reliable repair in engine compartments up to 500° F. It’s super strong and impervious to water, petroleum chemicals and acids. WARNING: It does not work on plastic (such as the plastic coolant tanks that are now common on most cars), but it works great on aluminum core or copper core cooling fins. Best of all, it only takes 2-3 hours to fully cure.

If you use a temporary “cold weld” repair on your cooling system, you should also consider using a low pressure cap. A cap with an overflow release less than 10 lbs per square inch is ideal. If you don’t do this, and the engine gets overly warm, you risk blowing out your repair.

Although a quick fix might seem like the solution, ideally you should replace the faulty component with a new or quality aftermarket part. Your cooling system works hard and the last thing you want is to be stranded, when you least expect it, far from home. In most cases, you can replace a radiator, hoses, clamps and coolant yourself, at home, for less than $250.

Avoid cost repairs to your car’s cooling system by maintaining the coolant annually and checking your hoses regularly. It’s smart maintenance that will save you time and money.

The Yamaha Motif XS8 (Feature Fantastic)

When musicians think of the brand Yamaha, they think of reliability. Their reasoning for that thought is completely filled with validity. Yamaha continues to be the leading brand in a host of instruments, accessories, and musical gear. Simply put; YAMAHA ROCKS! Its always a plus for a company to have an upward mobility when it comes to their products and services. With that in mind, I would like to hone in on the Yamaha Motif XS8 today. First, I would like to take a very miniscule peek at its evolution. Yamaha first came out with the first Motif workstation in 2001. It quickly became the new standard with its super sonic capabilities, and its performance features in real-time. This quickly made it the preferred choice for professionals. Yamaha, knowing that they were on to something great, continued to enhance the Motif workstation. In 2003 Yamaha introduced the Motif ES (Extensive Sonic) to the music world. It had more polyphony and more waveforms than the original Motif. The next wave of evolution came with the Yamaha Motif XS8. It now has 355MB of waveforms, a huge color LCD screen, eight real-time knobs and sliders, and more than doubled the polyphony of the original Motif to 128 voices. This machine’s awesomeness is massive. I’d like to delve into some of the enhancements you can expect from this workstation.

The Sounds: If you know anything about Yamaha’s keyboard line, you would know that its full of great piano sounds. This 88 key-weighted series of the Motif is no different. Its default keyboard is the Full Concert Grand Piano, this sound is beautiful and authentic it will leave you wanting to hear it everyday. The pads and the organs are great for live performances if you don’t have a Hammond B3 handy. They also sound great in pro- tools. I’m in love with the string patches, particularly the Stryngs patch. Others patches, like the Solo Violin and the Solo Viola are great also. There are a host of FX sounds that spark my creativity when I hear them. This board is loaded with quality sounds that can be used in any musical situation.

The Control: With the Yamaha Motif XS8, you have more control than any of the previous workstations. There are 8 assignable knobs and sliders. That’s a 4-slider expansion from the ES model. The knobs give you the ability to tweak the attack, resonance, sustain, cut-off, decay and a host of EQ effects. There are two assignable function buttons with the connections also. Those connections are for two assignable foot-switches, as well as foot-controllers. The control that you have with this workstation is what any keyboard player would want.

User Friendly Platform: The Yamaha Motif XS8 would have been a very hard to master workstation had it not been for the simplicity put into the complexity of its platform. It is arranged into nine main modes: PERFORM, VOICE, SONG, PATTERN, MIXING, MASTER, UTILITY, SAMPLING and FILE. An example of how these modes simplify things for you would be: If you are in performance mode, it will allow you to layer up to four voices simultaneous voices. However, if you are in voice mode, you can only play one voice at a time. I’m impressed by the ease of use this complex machine has.

The Motif continues to reinvent itself over and over again. The Motif XS8 is a great improvement from the ES, and an even greater improvement from the Yamaha MO8. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who is ready to play and control a professional but simple workstation. TWO THUMBS UP!

Flowers For Your Lesbian Wedding – Part One

    What flowers should I choose?

    First do you have favorites?

Are there any you are absolutely must have? If so, check to make sure you can get them for the date of your wedding. If they are out of season in the northern and southern hemispheres and not greenhouse grown, you can not get them. Quickly change the date of your wedding to a time when you can easily get them. Those flowers will be cheaper then too.

With some holidays it may even be cheaper to get what you want.

Try not to reschedule your wedding just before or up to Valentine’s Day. The cost of flowers, especially red roses, is exorbitant then. The week following Valentine’s Day, you might find so real bargains with florists. Another example is with something like holly in the winter months; holly is abundant, so for a beautiful background for your flowers, this can be a real cost saver.

Feel free to match your flowers with the season or holiday that your wedding date is near. BUT do not feel locked in to just those colors. Have the flowers that you want and the type of flowers as well. This is your wedding and be happy with the colors and flowers you want.

When picking your florist, pick a florist that wants to design your bouquet and arrangements the way you want them. Do not settle for less. Move on to another florist who will do things your way. Even go to another florist that can come up with new ideas that you like. You want to be happy about who you pick for a florist, your bouquet, and your arrangements.

How to Keep a Long Distance Relationship Exciting

Handling a relationship is never an easy thing to do. It requires a lot of things for it to work and to survive. Imagine doing these things far from each other? Do you think it’s possible to keep a long distance relationship work? Nothing is impossible. But, is this relationship can be as exciting as when the two of you is together? It can be. Here are some ways on how to keep a long distance exciting.

    1. Use all the possible communication ways to be with each other. May it be snail mail, e-mail, or even chat; you need to continuously communicate. Make it a habit to send text massages as if you just live a few blocks away. Cyberspace is now the new place for people to stay close. You have to take advantage of that and I’m sure that you will feel like she just lives next door. Chat for hours and talk face to face by using a web cam. You can always make things fun and exciting using the web cam. Play some online games, like hangman and make it more interesting by making it a strip hangman. The one that loses has to remove an item of clothing. It will not only be fun it will also make both your evenings steamy. Internet makes everything close so, use it to continuously be in each other’s side even when you are miles apart.

    2. Send each other gifts. It will make your girl feel appreciated once she receives something from you. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Simple things can make your girl feel that you are just a phone call away. Make it romantic by sending intimate gifts like lingerie that you would love to see her wear. You can add a message that you will be looking forward to seeing it on her. She will have something to look forward to and it will make her feel better even if she is a thousand miles away. How to keep a long distance relationship exciting is not easy but there are always creative ways to make everything plausible and bearable.

    3. Have something to look forward to. Plan a get together that both of you will definitely enjoy. It could be a vacation on a different country or you can have a weekend getaway on a beach or a mountain longhouse. This will definitely help replenish the relationship. If you have something to look forward to, time tends to fly. Plan this together, and make everything as memorable as possible. This will definitely help you pass the rough times.

    4. Do things together. It doesn’t mean that since you no longer live near each other, you can’t have a good time together, right? So why not go out with your friends for an evening of fun. Keep each other posted of what is happening and compare notes on what the latest news are on each other’s side of fun. You can plan on what you will do once you or your girl visits. You can also try watching the same program while discussing about its good and bad points on the phone.

Being far from each other doesn’t mean that you can no longer do what you usually enjoy together. You just have to be more enthusiastic in doing things. Distance might make others forget. But all of these depend on how much you want your relationship to work. How to keep a long distance relationship exciting? I believe that you just have to make the best of what you have and exert some more efforts and make everything a wee bit creative.
